Unless you're talking about TRY, GBF actually WAS good. Surprisingly so. I didn't give it time of day until last year on a lark because I got back into gunpla, and the first iteration is surprisingly well written even if it's at its heart a generic action/friendship shonen series. Possibly because it was written with a definitive "end" in sight (unlike stretching into the infinite, like Jump shonen), by people who liked gundam.

It's the direction SEED as a whole should have taken had Fukuda not been such a clown.

There were far too many Graze variants but besides from that I really liked IBO's mech designs. The one they showed off from next season looks really nice as well.

If the franchise wants genuine success with an AU story ever again then they're going to have to clone 00. Get a solid character designer, make the cast big and varied, get a writer who can put out something linear and easy to follow, and pile on the homolust.

It's not going to fucking work otherwise, that's just the reality of the situation. Anything else is just throwing money off a cliff and hoping it somehow comes flying back at them.

Nobody said that 00 was the most successful AU series, but it was their last big AU success in the modern age. This is owed entirely to its cast, which was well-designed and well-utilized for the most part.

The fact of the matter is that political intrigue doesn't have mass appeal, especially among anime's current fanbase. Good character dynamics, on the other hand, can take a series really far. 00 managed to stick a bunch of appealing relationships into what wasn't really a strong storyline and it blew the fuck up, so that's the aspect they need to replicate if they want to see success again with an AU.
