The plot is there but not presented in the best manner. It's decent enough. Though as pointed out, it's certainly deep in terms of developing the psychology of its characters.

The characters? Some of them and their flaws have real depth, but it's mostly a straight deconstruction of it's genre. Great music, though.

Compared to anime and most typical normie programming shit out there, yeah.

Certainly more depth to it than GoT, Walking Dead or any of that sort.

Though if Gainax and Anno actually did a decent job explaining the plot then the deep factor would be cut by about a third.
