I watched the Anime and both Movies afterwards. I do think that the Movies are good, but I'd still recommend to watch the anime first.

Don't have one, but I'd support Trigger, Bones and Madhouse.

It was very good and I enjoyed the ride a lot. Everyone a best.

Gun Buster and Getter are both medioicre in and of themselves, but were huge influences on mecha and anime overall. Watching them would give you a better perspective on what kind of essence TTGL was trying to capture.

Them dying and the minor space battles didn't add anything meaningful. Lagann-hen flows better, easier to feel the forward movement from start to finish.

I liked the movies. There's no particular reason, but I didn't feel bored watching them and that's the only thing that matters to me.

Them dying means that the enemies are actually competent in bringing despair to the surviving crews. When the casualty was only the stardude just to have TTGL splitting up and posing (complete with kewl writings), it has made a HISE parody of itself.

Why was the second half so shit?

I never bothered with the first movie but the second one is better.
It removes the unnecessary Rossiu coup.
It removes the unnecessary teleport to save Rossiu.
It removes the unnecessary deaths of the crew at the end.
It adds tons of new animation.
It mentions that Nia will die if the anti-spiral are defeated.
The final anti-spiral battle is much better than in the show.

One of the major points of the story is how Getter Rays can be harmful to the universe and how it will eventually lead to the creation of Getter Emperor, a being that will consume the universe while it keep evolving. Spiral Energy and its consequences is literally a rip-off of Getter Rays. Hell, in SRW Ryouma fires up a Getter Beam at Simon so he can power up their SGGL.

Getter Emperor is ever growing and evolving, it is far from being at its finality. Not to mention to manifest STTGL and TTGL you need to be in a closed space like the one created by the anti spirals, unlike GE which can exist outside of such a space.

Not op, but I just watched ttgl last week. Only been into Bolivian crop circles five years or so, and don't care much for mecha. Having said that, it's in my top five now I've finally arrived. Aniki.

Compared to 70s children's shows? Sure. But compared to Mazinger Shougeki, Tetsujin Gou or Giant Robo its as simple as it gets.
