I've thought about this. I think it's because of the lack of proper role models in contemporary Western culture. Young boys are being brainwashed to look up to trashy rappers instead of stalwart frontiersmen, girls to slutty celebrities instead of beautiful princesses. A lot of anime promotes traditional values, featuring masculine protagonists who are faced with near-insurmountable challenges that they overcome through strength of will, hard work, or cunning strategy. Females are hyper-feminine, embracing gender roles and providing support to the men. Watching a weak protagonist grow and evolve into an epic hero can't help but inspire one to strive for excellence. It just so happens that the ideals behind many popular anime are greatly compatible with right wing culture.

No excuse for race mixing though.
