How do you quantify this in regards to law? Any asshole can claim some endangered species was eating their crops. If someone is using poison (cheaper than mechanical traps) to remove supposed pests, the poison can spread into the local ecosystem. It has to be regulated, just like it is with hunting. Why didn't the farmer seek permits?

I think at least here commercial farmers have to apply for special permits to get rid of birds like magpies. And others can shoot trash birds outside nesting season. But nobody gives a shit about the laws. Not like they're going extinct.

Farmers here can take certain species out of season but only if they live on the property. They can't hire someone or technically the local teenagers can't even have some fun with .22s. It's not profitable for the farm owner to spend his day shooting squirrels and rabbits when he has 200 acres to tend

Because he's not killing it in a legal way. Setting traps and snares for wildlife is illegal in pretty much all EU countries because you don't know what your going to end up killing.

There are various ways to deal with birds without killing them, or you have to kill them following legal procedures. Not sure if the bird he killed was a magpie, though. The man acted like a retarded monkey is all. I have no issues with the idiot getting fined for dealing improperly with pests.

I am not to bothered by this. He could not prove economic damage and the effects of killing one magpie is small. I do belive he has a right to protect his crop, but do it in a way that does not involve catching birds in rattraps.
