HxH characters are forever being left out of arcs, I could see a time skip happening naturally without hurting the series. If Gon and Killua aren't in the DC arc and the trip lasts long enough, it's effectively a time skip for them.

The DB timeskip didn't immediately damage the series. And while DBZ got worse after it's timeskip, it had started to decline well before that.

Honestly the timeskips had very little direct influence on the quality of DB/DBZ.
