The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. Rick, the main character of the show, is a genius scientist that has a bunch of inventions like laser guns, etc. He lives with his daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson (Morty).

In one episode in season 3, he turns himself into a pickle so he doesn't have to go to his family counseling session. He then gets accidentally washed into a sewer, and eventually makes a bio-suit out of dead rats and fights Russian mercenaries to get the device to change himself back into a human. It's complicated.
