western trade deals

so did all the other non western nations

argument discarded!

Anime.

You can only teach a people that wants to learn already. They were an exception in that regard. The Dutch gave trinkets to all their trading partners.

It was Defensive Modernisation.

They were either going to be colonized by the Americans (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_C._Perry)
or they were going to modernize, following the west's example, in order not to be colonized.

This, combined with a 16y/o emporer, the Meiji era of Japan would change its country, society, economy and international position drastically within 60 years.

Another important factor was that they had the ability to afford this transformation, because they had something that the rest of the world wanted: Silk

it depends on "successful", their life expectancy didn't really rise like other industrial nations until after WW2. Even though they were progressing technologically their people were stuck culturally. There are some reasons why they fared better than other eastern country's tho.

Scarce resources motivated them to become more efficient
The Tokugawas were amazingly resourceful and open minded rulers. They embraced technology and innovation.
The Japanese people were abnormally clever.

They were an island nation near major trade routes. They had a large enough population to keep visitors polite but not large enough to scare anyone. They chose their allies wisely.

are you forgetting that the mongols conquered all the way to vienna and would have kept going if the khan had not died?

the mongols enabled trade between the furthest reaches of asia and europe and the fact that goods from the mongol empire were no longer available after it fell was what caused european nations to go looking for alternate trade routes and thus discovering the new world

They copied Western culture and technology. That's it.

Correct, though I wonder why the koreans didn't do the same.

Before the Koreans had the chance, the Japs colonized them

Obviously, but why didn't the koreans westernize first and colozine the japanese instead?

>re you forgetting that the mongols conquered all the way to vienna and would have kept going if the khan had not died?

That was the Turks. Mongols didn't get much further than modern day Ukraine. And their horses would have been useless in mountain terrain so we would have raped their asses just like white people always do

>What was their secret?

There was no anime back then

Mongols

Korea was under influence of the Qing dynasty from China, back then. The Qing dynasty tried to defend itself from western imperialism in another way, but lost from the british in the Opium war.

So basically Korea didn't, because they weren't able to b/c not atonomous and didn't have the same incentive to do so.

Being an island nation with terrible teeth with always lead the nation to industrialization.

>What is the Ottoman Empire

Turks aren't human they are cockroaches and insect nations don't count

Because when confronted by the obvious superiority of another culture they almost immediately thought, "OH SHIT, better copy what these guys are doing" then proceeded to copy what we were doing and didn't sniff their own farts about their own superiority despite the fact that they were laughably inferior (See China) or allow a foreign power to play on petty intra-country disputes to conquer them(See India).

Basically, Japan saw a problem, and instead of plugging their ears they sought out the fastest possible solution they could find. This is also why they were the first East Asian country to truly westernize after World War 2 despite being firebombed/nuked into oblivion.

what is Devshirme
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devshirme
they literally got white christians to run the empire, I'm not even joking

this how brazil happened

This

Timing. The were actually having their civil war with flintlocks and samurai swords in 1865 when the US Civil War was going on in the middle of the industrial revolution.

The fight was between the Progressives (The Emperor) and the Conservatives (The Shogunate). The Shogun wanted to keep the old way and trusted the "Samurai warrior spirit" would protect Japan from the "Barbarians" despite the face when the few times they did come in contact with foreign troops the got their ass kicked.

The Emperor's argument was "Modernize or be Colonized." He saw what European powers were doing in China and Southeast Asia and knew it was a matter of time. Once the Emperor's side won the Civil War, they immediately modernized, by searching the globe for the best military tech, buying it, and hiring Western soldiers and veterans to teach them how to do it right.

Less than 100 years later they ruled Asia.

If you read up on Japanese history, you will notice that Japanese leaders of the post-unification era were pretty insane and had lofty ambitions for their new unified nation.
Apparently, there were plans as early as 1500s to invade and colonize all of east asia, southeast asia, and even the indian subcontinent.
So nips were always kinda nutty to begin with.

ottomans got so cucked that christians nearly took over the empire because they couldnt stand the imorality and corruption in the ottoman places and goverment

>>janniseries then got killed off

and then the donmeh and fake muslims took over control of the ottomans ((( oy vey)) after they killed of the christians janniserie leaders
