SAO was pretty ok, innofensive and even cute even if the final battle was highly stupid. But the stakes were there and the relationship between the main protagonists was actually its high point.
Then ALO happened. It didn't need to. It was literally written after almost a decade later.

It's because it followed the new age story plot in anime, form a solid romantic relationship, then introduce a harem with 1st wife ok with MC's concubines, or at least not acting like a jealous bitch about it.
It also abandoned the core death survival concepts LN fags had for it, as well as game concepts.
We knew the original story was rushed, in the anime development we wanted it fleshed out, at least take some stories from WN2 that was out at the time.
Instead they did the market machine on it and boy did it sell well, it got pigeon holed for pre-teens, and if you look at it from that angle this series is perfect material for the age group.

Depends. The adaptation of Mother's Rosario was 10/10, while the rest of the adaptation was somewhere between mediocre and balls. A-1 can do well when it tries.

If Kirito takes a secondary role and they focus more on Eugo at first and Alice afterwords I think it has the potential to be very good.

ALO was fine in the novel. The anime frankly butchered it. GGO was a quick diversion in the novel and Sinon was a pretty cool guy. None of the actual good stuff (Alicization) has been animated.
