In contrast, judging a group of people based on their adherence to a religion makes sense. People make a choice to be part of a religion and discriminating against Muslims or Jews or Christians based on their conscious adherence to such a group is perfectly justified.

You have to trace it up to higher principles. Racialists are usually atheists, materialists, and biological determinists. They are staunch hereditarians. Hence a good coloured person is simply an "outlier" to them, and their children will "regress to the mean" and "go back to their true biology." It's a natural part of the human mind to be wary of those who are different and this becomes combined with the propensity for a group to be a particular way. Think of the way the good Samaritan story began. If X happens more often than Y when dealing with a given group or culture than you will judge most if not all to do X instead of Y. It makes sense if you're trying to survive in a world that is trying its hardest to damn well make sure your ass doesn't survive to the next day. Outsiders are a potential threat and the more alien they are the more you want to avoid them and/or take them out before they get you.
People who "aren't racist" are just good at controlling their instincts via the usage of cultural norms that say to not judge someone based on their appearance or group association (if it's a group they did not choose to belong to such as race). Or they giggle worthingly swing the pendulum so far to the anti-racist side they end up becoming racist themselves.

This is because with some religions, such as Judaism, the religion is tied ethnically. If your mother or grandmother on either side isn't Jewish then you're not Jewish to the community plain and simple. It's a genetic religion more or less. When it comes to religions such as Islam it's because 95% of the practitioners are from a particular part of the world so to the outsider it seems like racism because the Muslim is brown and hater is white or black.

I try not to judge people based on their genetics, or racial heritage.
However, I've had a hard time arguing against myself that racism isn't pattern recognition. I mean, surely every wolf, for example, wouldn't react violently if I approached it, yes? Yet we say wolves are violent without so much as batting an eye.
