Reality is of that 2 dozen "close personal friends" 80% saw him once or twice a month in the grocery store or at a bar and said hi, a further 15% have a biased opinion and motive for telling you what they are. Its inevitably one of two things

Its entireley dependant upon whether they had a good or bad relationship and means pretty much nothing to the investigation.
Maybe 5% of witnesses actually saw or retained anything useful and even then they might unintentionally mislead you with bad recall or assigning importance to details that didnt matter.

But I do enjoy watching Sup Forums bring out the armchair forensics expert in everyone. Its interesting to try to guess which crime/drama series they watched to get thier so called expertise from.
And eye witnesses are literally the worst evidence. Most of the time even when you have a fully compliant witness who earnestly wants to help youre lucky if 25% of what they tell you is useful.
People confabulate and tell you stuff the BELIEVE to be true but isnt. (Had a witness who we can confirm was face to face with a suspect swear to this day he had green eyes when he actually had brown eyes.) They assign importance to stuff that doesnt matter (his eye color is of very very little importance to our investigation anyways, but this witness felt it was and spent 20 minutes of the interview describing his eyes.)
Other times witnesses have shitty charecter and get tore apart in court by defence lawyers when theyre actually telling the honest truth.
