"Dark horse of the season" indicates something that is unexpected to do anything of note but ends up becoming popular and sells a lot. Something like Osomatsu-san or Shirobako would be examples of this
QUALITY Code is possibly one of the more blatant examples of an anime designed by committee to sell since Kabaneri last season. This can't be a "dark horse" because it was getting the usual hype levels of marketing from Aniplex anyway. And what a shock, after that terrible episode 1, nobody seems to care about it.
