It was marketed as a slightly goofy shooter with paranormal undertones to make it distinct from other World War II games of the time. It was a good series then.

From what I've seen of this most recent one, it seems to simultaneously take itself too seriously and not spend enough time on the paranormal stuff. It's basically another game designed to sell a shitton of copies, and for that it is necessary for the gameplay to be simple, bland and railroaded so that 98% of players can finish it, or they'll get complaints. It's a game for the modern mass market, and that probably makes it shit.

That's why this game and Man in the High Castle are good. It gives a truthful view that a Nazi takeover would be very clean and orderly. However that comes at the cost being under an unrelenting authoritarian boot that will smash you if don't abide by the strict culture. A lot of neo-nazis today probably would have been ostracized if not outright eliminated in a nazi occupied world.
