1: he wasnt really that into it, he said in an afterword that he only wrote it up intially for a magazine contest and ended up missing the contest and having too much written for the contest and thus he turned it into a book series.

2: He admitted to not knowing much about youkai in general as well in another afterword. He might have just been in a dead end for it and decided that it was best to end it.

Id even be okay with a summon//blood sign anime too, honestly.
