Soul Eater unfortunately is a pretty good equivalent, but at the same time the manga ending isn't much better.

Not him, but as far as I know, it is. I wanted to see the ending of this after like 12 years only to discover that there is none. I would also say that the art is not really great even for early 2000 anime.
