Why don't Croats identify as Slavs?
I've found that nationalism in most Slavic countries has some sense of Slavic brotherhood to it. Or at least some sort of overarching Slavic sensibilities. Croatians appear to be the exception to this rule. I've even seen Croatian nationalists online outright deny that Croats are even Slavs and try to argue that they're descended from Goth tribes are are Germanic or something. What makes Croats so reluctant to embrace the tracksuit, Sup Forums?

If I was to make an observation (and I have basically 0 knowledge on the Balkan Slav situation) it could be due to the fact that at the time of the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, the Croatians were the 2nd most loyal to the Austrians with Hungary being the top loyal member. From what I know as well in the event that Austria-Hungary expanded to have a third constituent nation within it, Croatia would have been the like candidate to manage the Balkan Slavs. Obviously as we know the opposite happened and Serbia led the slavs. It might stem from that but I'm probably very wrong about it.

I suspect it's mostly down to our close relationship with Germany and shared history with Austria and Hungary, which also resulted in a high germanic or Hungarian admixture in some parts of Croatia.

Plus, there is quite a contempt for the "pan-slavic" idea in Croatia, mostly because it's been co-opted by Serbs to mean Greater Serbia, and we fought a pretty bloody war to get out of that one.

Ustasa Hardliners are usually the ones who claim germanic descent, some do it out of true belief and some do it out of sympathy to Ustasa regime which did it to pander to the Germans.
What is saying also is true. We even invaded hungary when they rebelled against austria.
Also Historically Pan-slavic developments sooner or later always ended with Serbs seizing power and persecuting croats, so its no suprise alot of people arent fond of it.

as for the other side of the border, in ottoman empire everyone in the balkans who isn't a loyal muslim (so serbs, greeks, buglarians and albanians) had to pay taxes to the local converts who ruled over their region and they would be spared off any further involvement with them. there was of course time when they would pay harder form of taxes like giving babies to the ottomans so they could be raised as janissaries, but those people later could become high ranking officials which some of them did...
