Previous thread: TL;DR: Continuing from yesterday where we started fresh on a chart I meant to finish 3 years ago. We're picking the best examples for certain aspects to showcase them.
How this works: >each category has room for 5 examples >think up a good example >you must provide visual evidence and put forward an argument for your example >other anons can chime in on a person's choice to debate or support it >if we reach 5 examples, don't despair - with a good enough argument you may be able to override a previous choice >I will act as fairly as I possibly can and try my best to take everyone's thoughts into account
Some extra things to take into account: >in the effort of getting a good spread of examples pick only what you think is the best of a best of a director's work so we don't get multiple examples from the same person >you can use historical significance towards your argument and if you think something truly excelled for its time >some underappreciated works, so long as they really did excel, would be nice >if you see an existing example on the chart but know of something which did it even better, make sure you point that out
Changed a few things from last time after going over some recommendations made while I was away. Added a 'Mechanical' category since an user pointed out that it is quite a specialised field and will allow the overlap that comes from hand-drawn and CGI. It doesn't all have to be strictly mecha either - so long as it's mechanical in nature. Choreography isn't restricted to just fighting either.
Underwater examples aren't that common, so that does seem like a good suggestion.
Zachary Green
(Re-posting from prev thread)
Although Fireball was in the previous chart, it's still a much better choice than Garo. And I'm saying this as someone who actually does like Garo.
Nathaniel Morris
Tatami Galaxy should be a contender for Unique Style. Same goes for Katanagatari, which could also fit in some other categories.
Charles Hughes
CGI or Mechanical, user?
Already got Ping Pong. Same director.
Brandon Jenkins
CGI, I guess.
Mason Lewis
>Choregraphy towa no quon kara no kyoukai CW serei no moribito
Jason Walker
Kara no Kyoukai for Choregraphy
Landon James
That Mind Game screenshot is from Tatami Galaxy
Noah Walker
The picture for Mind Game is from Tatami Galaxy. Also Five Star Stories and Gundam Unicorn should go in mechanical.
Joseph Cooper
For the mechanical section, there should be 2D-animated mecha somewhere. Thereare scarcity of this stuff in recent years. This season's Regalia is working to remedy that, but then again it is too recent. That mean you should look at older stuffs that I am not familiar with. Someone from /m/ might have a good suggestion on this.
Aaron Moore
Maybe Eternal Family for experimental.
Oliver Cook
Jesus Christ
This chart is shit
What the fuck are you doing?
Grayson Johnson
Penguindrum for cinematography
Tyler Brooks
Listening to Sup Forums.
Caleb Foster
What's wrong with it?
Dylan Nguyen
Ah, thanks.
Hunter Johnson
>kara no kyoukai Please no.
Juan Powell
Aku no hana for quality pls
Matthew Brooks
>Animated Motion Not to say titles like Sapce Dandy, Nichijou and OPM wouldn't be well animated for tv-anime but you really can't include them over a multitude of films and OVAs if this chart exists to provide the absolute best examples of given category.
Gavin Perez
Tamako Love Story for cinematography.
Andrew Martin
Making a category for "cinematography" shows a lack of basic understanding of the medium as a whole and just shows that OP doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.
If the point of a chart about visuals is to guide people into watching something that looks good then EVERY SERIES SHOULD HAVE GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY.
Ryder Cooper
>EVERY SERIES SHOULD HAVE GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY I agreed with you up to there, but no, there are visual aspects that can look good without equating to great cinematography overall - good animation, good artstyle, scenery porn, etc.
Anthony Martin
Agreed.
Tyler Brooks
Tweeny Witches for unique style
Anthony Morales
Not necessarily.
Julian Wilson
I don't think it's inherently wrong. The category can be there to show the examples of where the cinematography is exceptional and deserves a mention of its own.
Jace Hill
Rakuen Tsuiho and Code Geass:Akito have some good sample of mechanical aspects and nicely blended CGI and 2D.
Kayden Butler
Cinematography is a TOOL used in filmmaking and anime whereas something like "animated motion" is a stylistic choice.
It's like putting "Audio" as its own option.
Start over. Or just scrap this garbage chart entirely. Cause you retards have got it all wrong.
Samuel Jenkins
Seconding Katanagatari for art style.
Matthew Miller
You're right, audio should have its own column.
Hunter Lee
Shit that's actually a great idea
thank you
Levi Gonzalez
Why were those categories chosen? For example why is it primarily visual arts and no voice acting, music or sound?
Carter Ward
What if it was renamed to "framing"? Most of the films already in there do framing excellently.
Adam Lee
You're not in a position to be calling others retards here, user.
Jaxon Morgan
>space dandy >nichijou >one punch man I see we let Sup Forums make it on the chart. Excellent.
Jack Phillips
How the fuck can a series excel at "art style"?
What kind of pseudointellectual came up with this garbage
Cooper Long
I was thinking about doing a sound-related chart last night. So we'll see.
Make your argument for something that's better then, user. Don't just sit there and complain.
Jackson Rivera
Karas for CGI.
Brandon Jackson
"Stuff that excels in..." a fucking stock chart titlethat's been in use for the better part of a decade, have you not seen the others?
Carter Kelly
Mr Stain on Junk Alley for CGI? Can't really find a good image though without logos.
Jaxson Harris
...
Matthew Gomez
You're not doing a good job of disguising your samefaggotry. Fuck off.
Cameron Collins
Megazone 23 for either urban or mechanical Tetsuwan Birdy ova, AnJ 2, or Macross Pluss for choreography A 1001 Nights for unique style
Kayden Miller
While it is good, I think the audio part should split to another chart. If chartfag plan to make it, I especially like to know anime with exceptional sound design.
Cameron Thomas
>animated motion is a stylistic choice No, in fact, animated motion is also a tool used in the medium of anime.
Angel Torres
More pictures and arguments, please. It's hard looking up pictures for everything I've seen a lot of series, but not nearly enough for something like this.
Kevin Harris
>"Audio" as its own option. Sounds like a great idea. A music chart like pic related except categorised, classical music with Nodame etc.
Wyatt Bell
...
Owen Hill
I remember providing the chart for this, but I don't think I was able to get very far in helping to fill it out. Some nice user took over for me.
Oliver Ross
>still using disgusting gaia-tier multiple fonts I despise you chart-san
Levi Barnes
Megazone 23 set the tone for the ova bbom
John Parker
Says the guy posting pics from facebook.
>inb4 'I got it off google' In which case I mock you for not having the appropriate folders of reaction images.
Carson Adams
>No lain I am a little upset.
Josiah Young
low taste
Nolan Perez
>still using disgusting gaia-tier multiple fonts
Normally not much gets to me, but this is going too far, user.
I-It's not like I went looking for fonts for hours just so I could do this and make it look fun or anything!
Jackson Sullivan
That's pretty rich coming from a type moon ass licker.
Kara no Kyoukai has horrendous choreography.
Thomas Smith
It's not exactly outstanding cgi but its style fits its Tom and Jerry style plot structure with a old cartoony feel.
Kevin Ross
Seconding. Tamako Love Story has nice use of depth of field, composition, and soft light.
Jack Miller
Kara no kyoukai should be somewhere in cinematography or choregraphy.
Easton Bell
Fuck, I completely forgot about this. Didn't they put little episodes of this on their other show DVDs or something?
Leo Morales
What the fuck does that even mean? I swear, it's like some of you are just making up shit so that you can argue for the sake of arguing.
Jaxon Scott
I guess Hack GU trilogy movie doesn't count?
Jeremiah Cooper
>Being too stupid to know what something so obvious means And you know what fuck you, we are not arguing pointless bullshit so you will pay attention to us or anything you baka baka~
Adrian James
Would anyone mind if I changed Cinematography to 'Framing'?
I think pretty much everything we've picked goes into that sort of category anyway.
Gavin Bennett
If you say so then I can only trust.
Chase Ramirez
That's what I thought you were going for anyways, well either that and angle/panning/whatever else is done to mimic a traditional camera.
Angel Ramirez
(You)
Robert Bell
It doesn't matter. Some Sup Forums faggot who fancies himself a film student will bitch about the use of Framing anyway.
Luis Bailey
I don't know. I think I just saw adds for it one night at 3am years ago and then downloaded it online. Pretty decent though. Fun episodic slaptick anime about characters getting into crazy situations like Tom and Jerry cartoons and no voice acting or talking at all.
I won't say it it is the pinnacle and demands a space on the chart, but good CGI in anime isn't very common. But if other people like it and nothing better comes up it wouldn't hurt the chart.
Noah Torres
What was picked for 'Cinematography' would actually better fit for 'Framing' anyways.
Daniel Moore
A visual/metaphorical imagery column would have been pretty cool for stuff like Hyouka, Penguindrum, the Monogatari Series (actually haven't seen this yet so I'm just guessing it would go there), etc.
Brayden Hughes
Cap was sent to me over fb messenger. I'll retake it eventually with raws
He is using a different font for each header. It's something a mom putting together a poster on MS Word would do. On top of that they're retarded "party fonts". There's a reason fonts come in multiple weights, header body etc. It should've been called out in thread one, it's cancer.
Fuck you just use the same main font in a mid weight. It's so ugly I cringe everytime I see these, I really hate you and go die
Also why is Sup Forums's taste so terrible? The animation chart especially is worthless. You should've made it 6 years ago, it's completely pointless to have bothered now
inb4 reddit fanbase comes out the woodworks to defend based OC man from meanie heads just because he's making OC
Dominic Gray
>fb messenger >reddit fanbase
You really aren't in any position to talk.
Camden Russell
It'd be too awkward to change the font now when every other chart has the different fonts. If I do an audio one I'll keep it consistent.
Sup Forums chart was made 5 years ago, user. Strangely, they were great when it came to the comic side of things but once we got into the animated side of things people barely had anything to offer. I ended up having to fill out a lot of it myself using what little knowledge of cartoons I had from the 80s and 90s.
John Robinson
>Metropolis >mecha wut
Lucas Jackson
Wow, I do not approve of this bullying
Ian Davis
>That sharp bordering on the whit text Ow my eyes.
Jack Martinez
There is in a later version.
Robert Butler
It's always amazing how some people really do love to start shit over the most trivial of issues.
Aiden Miller
That's better, thank you user.
Parker Gray
thirding
Anthony Perry
If no one got autistic over fonts all we'd have is comic sans. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.
Hunter Jenkins
katanagari for artstyle
Josiah Barnes
I remembered someone recommended Turning Girls for minimalism in the last thread.
Thomas Cooper
Big O for unique style or minimalism Cowboy beebop for cinematography or choreography Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood for choreography Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 for cgi usage Initial D Fourth Stage for sgi usage Howl's Moving Castle for nature scenery
Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran can be called a hidden gem when it comes to coreoraphy. It's a pretty good show over all that nobody ever talks about.
Carter Scott
what the fuck is a turning girl?
Asher Jackson
Please no. Turning Girls wasn't even that special and there's already Tatami Galaxy for the similarity in minimalist art style.
Samuel Long
Mechanical should have at least Broken Blade
Also Fafner Exodus > Majestic Prince
Nolan Wright
People being autistic over "trivial" things is the only reason anything ever has any quality and is good. Without people like user, we'd still most likely be watching SD quality streams with XVID encoding.
Jin Roh should be in the Animatied Motion bit. I've never seen solid objects animated so convincingly in any other work. They really appear to be in a 3D space.
Xavier Fisher
We already got Ping Pong which is the same director.
I very vaguely recall this. I can't remember the choreography standing out that well though.
DB was pretty good. Now that I think about it, someone was posting some pretty impressive webms in that animation thread a couple days ago... that were from one of the Naruto movies strangely enough.
also >no turn a gundam (world building and art style) >no kuuchuu buranko (art style) >no rain town (experimental) >no yamato 2199 (cgi) >no zoids (cgi) >no sora no woto (world building) >no darker than black (action) >no patlabor movie (realism) >no california crisis (art style) >no aiura (art style) >no kara no kyoukai (art style) >no planetes (realism) >no rolling girls (art style and animation)
