But Visual Key has a habit of bad things happening outside the characters' agency, everyone acts sad, then it's resolved by deus ex machina. A glaring example is the singer in Angel Beats (episode 3?).

It sounded promising. Her parents were fighting, and she actually did something about it by leaving home and getting a job. Then she falls ill and can't sing, and her own decisions become irrelevant. It's touching, but shallow.

Compare Angel Beats to Haibane Renmei. HR is about atoning for hurting someone now beyond your reach. AB is about people with contrived sad backstories in a mostly contrived plot with the ultimate contrived romance at the very end, in a setting that is basically high school without the schoolwork.
