It's likely everything is filtered in a way to make it seem worse than what it is. For example I've seen interviews that said people who try to escape have 3 chances before getting executed, which goes against the propaganda that has been spread for a long while that says if you try to escape your entire family will be tortured in prison camps.
Also many escapees who made it to S.K. have been exposed lying about their experiences to make it seem worse than what it was.
North Korea is extremely far right socially. I am not really interested in the Economics of it as long as it preserves tradition and nationalism.
