Previous thread TL;DR: Updating a chart I meant to finish 3 years ago and first started 6 years ago in the efforts of showcasing particular shows which have excelled in certain (niche) aspects.
How this works: >each category has room for 5 examples >think up a good example >you must provide visual evidence and put forward an argument for your example >other anons can chime in on a person's choice to debate or support it >if we reach 5 examples, don't despair - with a good enough argument you may be able to override a previous choice >I will act as fairly as I possibly can and try my best to take everyone's thoughts into account
Some extra things to take into account: >in the effort of getting a good spread of examples let's try not to let one director get too many spots >you can use historical significance towards your argument and if you think something truly excelled for its time >some underappreciated works, so long as they really did excel, would be nice >if you see an existing example on the chart but know of something which did it even better, make sure you point that out
Please note that GitS, Akira, and Neon Genesis are being left off intentionally simply because they excel in multiple categories and they're considered basic viewing anyway.
Don't forget that you can bump an existing choice off so long as you argue it properly.
Not like I haven't been trying (really hoping I don't have to do a part 5). People keep bitching about the choices on there because they don't read the OP about how they can bump off what's on there with a better example.
Samuel Bell
Just add Gantz:O already on CGI usage Sorry Zoids.
Matthew Moore
user... it's not even out yet.
Eli Green
Katanagatari would be better for choreography and place Rolling girls or Kokkuri-san in unique style
Evan Rivera
Katanagatari already got bumped from there.
I really don't recall Kokkuri-san being all that unique in its art style though. Same with Rolling Girls if you compare it to what's already in the category.
Jose Allen
Mob Psycho 100 for unique style, considering BONES is staying loyal to ONE's style, which is unique.
Evan Sanders
It's not finished yet, so I can't. Sorry, user. It's just hard to know if they'll keep up the consistency throughout the entire series.
Or else I'd put Berserk into the QUALITY section.
Luke Ramirez
Ah yeah that's true. I'll just hope they can keep up doing the great job they've done so far and the quality doesn't drop, and I agree with you on Berserk.
Camden James
>I'd put Berserk into the QUALITY section Why not? It's almost guaranteed it will be full of QUALITY.
Logan Foster
I hope so too. Looks like they're putting a lot of effort into it.
Charles Scott
I doubt it'll get any better... but still. Best to have fully completed series on there.
Cooper Wilson
Yo could you post the other Charts as well bro? Just wanna save them man. There really well done.
Isaac Roberts
Sure, mate.
Juan Morris
...
Tyler Bell
I'm not a fan of the Sup Forums animated one. Sup Forums was really slack in coming up with anything for that one so I had to fill half of it out with my shitty knowledge of cartoons from the 90s and earlier (Chipmunks did have good backgrounds though so at least I was okay with putting in that choice).
Lucas Wood
>Kekkai Sensen in urban
I'm okay with that
Josiah Taylor
should be Kara no Kyoukai but i'm not complaining
Isaac Clark
Kekkai Sensen did pretty well to capture that city feeling. For a tv series (and even though they fucked up with the last episode being delayed) they were surprisingly consistent with the quality.
Joshua Campbell
KnK only had the urban scenery porn for some of the movies (most notably the first and 3rd). Others were lacking and in general it wasn't prominent enough across all 7 to really justify recommending the series by virtue of that.
Noah Murphy
I nominate Lupin part 1 for framing, Tetsuwan Birdy or Ashita no Joe 2 for choreography, and Cobra or A 1001 Nights for unique style
Jace Powell
Well, yeah, visually speaking, but the show was pretty bad overall. If there is nothing better to put in there then KS is fine.
Dominic Sanders
>Tetsuwan Birdy Seconding for choreography
Caleb Green
i don't think you get the point of this chart, it isn't to recommend "good" series but series that excel in a certain category
Luis Myers
Oh yeah, THE Hakkenden is pretty unique as well
Jack Jackson
It's all to do with visual, so in this case it's fine.
Decode or the original OVA?
I think 1001 Nights would have fit better into experimental myself since it's a short.
Jace Flores
OVA, although decode is alright too >since it's a short I was talking about the feature length film from 1969
Kayden Lewis
>I was talking about the feature length film from 1969
Ah... Haven't seen that one myself.
Anthony Richardson
Holy shit that 1001 short is beautiful. Why isn't it up on the chart?
Owen Walker
Why the fuck is Fafner on that list?
It's fucking Fukada trash. You might as well put SEED Destiny on it
Eli Brooks
Someone wanted something from Orange and didn't like Majestic Prince's visual presentation.
But yeah, keep in mind it's all visual and the story doesn't matter.
Adrian Johnson
The list is for lesser known series, everyone knows Gundam
Samuel Martinez
Dunno. Nobody ever suggested it before.
Could go into surreal visuals. Paprika is pretty up there with GitS and Akira as basic viewing so maybe I could take it out. And Mind Games' director is already up there with Kaiba as well.
David Russell
Mostly just the very mainstream of mainstream we're keeping off. I still feel like even though people know about Gundam, it's not a series that is watched as often and there are individual pieces of the franchise which are often overlooked.
Camden Walker
You should at least have one Gundam on mechanical, then. Maybe 08th MS team
Wyatt Roberts
ninja slayer for unique style
Nolan Roberts
>08th MS Team
Dude, that's literally the most mainstream of mainstream
Kevin Nguyen
My knowledge of mecha is pretty shoddy in general so we'd probably need a few opinions in order to get a better list than what we got on there. Someone did mention that FFS didn't have enough consistency with the mechs to justify it being there.
Brandon Russell
You could always make a thread on /m/ for that aspect. They're the most well informed.
Carter Long
I probably could, but can you imagine if I told them to pick just five?
Ryan Richardson
Holy crap, there is an anime based on a kafka book?
picked the fuck up
Logan Wright
Yeah. Check it out, user. Very interesting art style.
Aaron Barnes
That would be either seed or wing
Jordan Peterson
Isn't 1001 supposed to be part of the same trilogy as Belladona?
Connor Thomas
Wait... just realised the character designer for 1001 Nights is the same guy behind Angel's Egg.
Brody Mitchell
1001 Nights was part of a filmharmonic series of some sort. It was the only animated one in it, so I doubt it.
I may actually get rid of Paprika and move Belladonna over to surreal if nobody objects.
Caleb Rodriguez
Nah, I think they'd be reasonable.
Just set your standards. Make it clear that the criteria for this selection is
1. Lesser Known 2. Animation Quality and Consistency
This is coming from a massive Fafnerfag. It's my favorite mecha series but I am bias'd towards it because I love the story, setting and characters and overlook a lot of the animations flaws at time, but Exodus is great to look at in my opinion.
I feel that if you want a list that people will take seriously, you must ask the experts.
True enough, but then I'd argue you should likely change up CGI usage if you do
Since Fafner Exodus does have the best CGI mecha action
Dominic Rogers
Alright then, here's what I got. Now we got a new column.
Apologies to those that contributed to the mechanical category before. I'm sure I'll be able to make it up to people if I'm ever able to get a chart done for /m/.
Kevin Green
Man, your chart is shit.
Alexander Campbell
What suggestions would you give to improve it then, user?
Luke Jackson
Just put either Escaflowne or Dragon's heaven for mecha and call it a day.
Or shift Honneamise to mecha and put something by studio colorido/Ishida Hiroyasu like Hinata no Aoshigure for urban.
Carter Ward
>new column Welp, here's to Part 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the threads.
Parker Hughes
Sorry, user. I'm gonna scrap that category and put a rain cheque in to hopefully do a full chart for /m/ one day.
I've done one for them before with the University of /m/, so it's doable.
Adam Gomez
I-I'll do my best not to make it blow out further.
I should have named this one 3.5 after how last night's one went though.
Brody Martin
eny place where i can watch dragons heaven?
Daniel Thomas
I think Anne Happy should go on the chart, but I do not know where.
Dylan Ward
You're seriously making things difficult for yourself, but eh, whatever, you are the one doing it anyway.
I'll call for Rolling Girls and any of Studio Colorido's work for the new column, then. youtu.be/2LwhdSkIBkQ
Camden Jenkins
Nominating Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita and Mawaru Penguindrum for Color Palette
Carson Foster
AB has the DVD iso but nobody has taken the sub from the shitty laser disc release to make a proper subbed DVD release .
There's nothing visually striking or special about that show.
Christopher Powell
Thanks. We don't have any overlap there in directors do we?
Some pics would help too. Finding good screenshots can be time consuming.
Asher Walker
Not him but it did looks somewhat unique, I don't know, it have something special that I can't name. Or maybe I just liked the show too much.
Jaxon Watson
Aoshigure
Ryan Campbell
Got one for Rolling Girls so don't mind that.
Ian Allen
Is that a screenshot or from a post, user?
Jace Baker
I mean poster
Kevin Sanchez
Colorido in general is great. Rain town should be on the chart somewhere. Even their commercials are great
Levi Gutierrez
poster.
Here's a screencap.
Connor Price
Jojo DiU has a really attractive color palette. I think it should goes in there
Zachary King
...
Joshua Martinez
Pretty good chart, reddit. I am proud!
Jose Martin
AH's visuals aren't nothing striking. Even something like Sakura Trick or Hanayamata was visually better.
Grayson Evans
Cool. Now worries, I found one (just had to do some spot fixing to get rid of a banner thing).
Eli Gutierrez
Tokyo godfathers in scenery porn: urban
Jaxon Parker
>Hanayamata I thought about that series but am not sure whether it should be in the chart because the only really noteworthy part was episode 1. The scene with the blond girl dancing with the fox mask on top of the shrine gate was beautiful, but all the other dance scenes later on were either still or just too short.
Also, some people might complain about the sparkles and bubble filter like people did with Prisma or other Silver Link shows.
Hyouka for color palette? I just don't want all of them to be shows with bright colors.
Hunter Adams
Kizu for colour palete.
Oliver Sullivan
and its only 1 movie? or is a series cus i found a place but it seams that is like only one chapter
Dominic Taylor
The scene was I talking about.
Henry Foster
better screenshot
Bentley Richardson
...
Christian Fisher
I liked it too, but I wouldn't say the palette was outstanding or anything.
Actually, Penguindrum might have aged a little as well. I get the feeling there's far better choices out there than it. Maybe even Yurikuma did it better.
Dylan Parker
Does anybody have that chart that grouped all the characters based on similar traits?
Owen Carter
So for colour palette are we looking for a good use of colours (symbolically), colourful shows, or shows that are really detailed?
William Green
We already got two Kyoani shows up there.
Aesthetically pleasing colour and maybe even texture like with the case of Rolling Girls using watercolour.
Jonathan Myers
...
Cameron James
...
Samuel Long
No Game No Life had an interesting choice of colors if anything.
Gavin Wilson
...
Dylan Bell
...
Caleb Walker
...
Ian Robinson
does anyone have the animated eyelasers
I loved those things.
Michael Bell
Rolling Girls deserves one place for color palette.
Elijah Sanchez
I'm putting in for Akagami no Shirayukihime. I remember that standing out a lot for me.
Personally I found them way too garish and not appealing at all. K (and Mardock Scramble) in particular just felt like they were ruining the work they put into their own backgrounds.
