For traditional Marxists, the good society is the classless society and both liberal and radical feminism are considered forms of false consciousness. For Marxists, women of all classes do not share a common situation and by obscuring class divisions through an emphasis on racial or gender differences, they inadvertently support the ruling class.
Capitalism creates a certain social structure in which the majority of people are poor or near poverty and it also creates an ideology characterized by the values of individualism, competitiveness, domination, and it encourages certain kinds of consumption. For Marxists, the development of capitalism leads to the development of “empty places.” It is not the division of the sexes, but rather the division of labor that makes the most impact on our lives.
The major blind spots in Marxism from a feminist perspective are the fact that the theory ignores two things: (1) women sustain the labor force through unpaid domestic work and (2) women reproduce the labor force by having children. In order for human beings to survive and continue existence from generation to generation, it is necessary for them to produce and reproduce the material requirements of life. The contributions women make are rarely accounted for in history.
This erasure obfuscates the real problem which feminists see as not just the acquisition of private property, but the fact that women themselves are considered property. In this way, I think feminists benefit greatly from a Marxist analysis, but also see Marxism as an incomplete theoretical framework for dealing with the problems of capitalism.
