I think you have to consider the average age of the TV news viewer, which is somewhere in the mid 60s. They have no fucking idea what a pokey man is, let alone what an augmented reality game is. If you explained it to them they'd think it was fucking devil magic or something. "Wander around strange places hunting for magic invisible monsters" - definitely devil magic.
If you tell them it was Russian communist devil magic designed to steal their medicare and social security they'll believe it in a heartbeat.
