In the last /CG/ that I was a part of, someone expressed interest in approaching god for the first time in his life - looking to discover something he was called to find but never quite had. He was asking about exactly "what or who, IS god?!?", to which the following regards:
"God is "the wholly Other", invisible, inconceivable, radically transcendent, beyond all words, beyond all understanding. "Surely the babe just born", writes the Roman Catholic George Tyrrell, "knows as much of the world and its ways as the wisest of us can know of the ways of God, whose sway stretches over heaven and earth, time and eternity".
A Christian in the Orthodox tradition will agree with this entirely. As the Greek Fathers insisted, "A God who is comprehensible is not God".
A God, that is to say, whom we claim to understand exhaustively through the resources of our reasoning brain turns out to be no more than an idol, fashioned in our own image. Such a "god" is most emphatically not the true and living God of the Bible and the Church. Man is made in God's image, but the reverse is not true.
Yet, in the second place, this god of mystery is at the same time uniquely close to us, filling all things, present everywhere around us and within us. And he is present, not merely as an atmosphere or nameless force, but in a personal way.
The God who is infinitely beyond our understanding reveals himself to us as a person, he calls us by our name and we answer him. Between ourselves and the transcendent God there is a relationship of love, similar in kind to that between each of us and those other human beings dearest to us. We know other humans through our love for them, and through theirs for us. So it is also with God. In the words of St. Nicholas Cabasilas, God our King is:
more affectionate than any friend more just than any ruler more loving than any father, more a part of us than our own limbs, more a necessary to us than our own heart"
The above is an excerpt from "The Orthodox Way" by Bishop Kallistos Ware. This is a book that I'd recommend most highly for ANYONE with an interest in Christianity. Its a paperback book, only about a half inch thick, that one could purchase on Amazon or many other sites rather inexpensively.

Not interested in going down that road, my friend. Some would say that ((((((they)))))) would sure hate to see Sup Forums become more of a Christian board, so they've been using these divide and conquer tactics (X isnt Christian), and also assaults of paeganism into /cg/ threads. Many of us think ((((((they)))))) started pushing paeganism once it became apparent atheism was never going to "take" here, so to speak.
Do you know whats interesting? Even in the least "sound" congregations, you can find pious Christians. The way that some look at things is that all Christians have at least a few pieces of the puzzle, but some have more than others, so they're able to see more of the "picture" than others might.
All genuine Christians are welcome ITT. I respect Catholics even tho I personally am not a fan of their pope. But, they've had other bad popes, which they survived as an institution, and they'll survive this one also. Amazing sound, I wonder what kind of mic a guy uses to pick that up with on the video, hah.

I'd say so! I started looking towards the faith after watching last fall's events (like when we had a happening per day for a while) and starting to feel like the world was falling apart around me. I stopped in /CG/ threads just like this one, bought a bible on Amazon and started reading the New Testament, and it really was life changing for me!
I'm honestly much happier than I've ever been before... I'm calmer, more patient, I feel like I deal with the degeneracy in society around me much better. I've felt the presence of the lord around me in Church and while praying after accepting him as my savior and Lord (I honestly hope all reading this will consider doing the same, it really is wonderful), I ended a 7+ year family dispute and made new church friends. As an added bonus, I brought my secular GF with me and she is converting also, we plan to get married soon and start a (large) family with roots deep in the faith.
Cant complain, famalam. Would you or anyone else like to share your story?

Ya know, I spent ~9 years of my life as an atheist, I used to look down at the Christians around me... But eventually, I started to doubt the "light" of atheism, I looked towards my Christian friends and relatives who seemed to have a solid grip on life and the world around them, they always seemed so calm and knowledgable. Thats really what got things started for me.
You guys talk down to us and personify us as backward simpletons while the society created and run without us crashes and burns throughout the western world.
But regardless, I ask you all to remember, that when you're ready for something more, a truly powerful experience, that you're welcome in, and welcome to Church anytime that you're ready.
I thought I'd never return, personally. You're still children of God just like us, for God still loves you even if you choose to turn your back on him. Like I said, the door is always open for you.

I'm not sure but I love old hymns. There's just a great beauty in everyone knowing a hymn and everyone singing it so powerfully. It's why I'm not a huge fan of churches that stopped using hymns and went to Christian Rock. Stuff like Pentecostals just don't have that feel this does.

I watched a video of a Russian female in Dominican Republic hanging out the window naked laughing and high as a kite hit her head on a pole instantly killing her. I have no doubt she is in hell. Just like I saw some other video of some guy who was livestreaming having sex with some girl and they car crashed and they both died. I also have no doubt that both are in hell. I am afraid that my end might be like that where I don't have a chance to ask for repentance and that scares me.
So how do I turn my ship around?

Go to a Greek Orthodox Church. A priest here in Adelaide wrote a whole book essentially correcting mistranslations that the gospel writers made when writing in Greek but from a Hebrew mindset. I can't remember the name of the book though. I'm fairly sure it's widespread though.
