Difference is the most jokes in KMB had pretty clear-cut punchlines while Nichijou had half of those and half complete dramatic non-sense.
The second half done frequently kills a gag show unless you have endless genius punchlines. And Kyoani's great animating quality, while fitting the scenes, it also magnified the problem when it got unfunny.

I'm still proud to be the only guy back then who predicted this becoming AOTS even before it aired.
The first half there were only 4 or 5 regulars posting in the threads, then it slowly started to get a fanbase, but only after it finished airing, people realized what a little gem it was.
The rest is history.
