The Old Testament is a series of cycles. Things are going great for the Jews. The Jews do something wrong and God punishes them. Than their punishment ends wit intervention from a prophet. This ushers in another high period. The whole old testament follows this cycle.
As for the Messiah. Jesus is pretty much the anti-Messiah. He fails a lot of the major elements such as having a father who is a descendant of David (the virgin birth disqualifies this). The Jewish messiah is also supposed to be a great warrior that allows the Jews to conquered their enemy. Jesus talks about turning the other cheek. He's someone introducing a strange new religion.

These are very different Gods.
Jesus is a man. The Jewish God has no gender (or he has both if you want to Kabbalah). The Jesus is a living thing and can die. The Jewish God is not alive so it can't die. The Jesus is part of a 3 piece set. The Jewish God has no parts, it isn't 1 piece, it's 0 pieces (or 10 if you want to Kabbalah).
But the biggest difference is the value system the Gods propose and how it interacts with people.
The Jewish God really only cares about Jews. And it does this through a type of contract with the Jews: power inexchange for exclusive worship. And it's mostly an earthly power.
The Christian God loves everyone equally and is concerned with pie-in-the-skys ideas more than earthly power. This is pretty much an inversion of the Jewish God.

Actually I just read a lot of my dad's old books, and the church fathers. He was a pastor. You should try it. I prefer the wisdom of the ancients. Even the weirdo ones. They came up with everything anyways.
For all believers, be careful about some of them, but the church fathers are our brothers, and in them is much wisdom. Be careful of the ones spouting subtle gnosticism. Also some delved too much into the various Greek schools of thought.
