I have studied him pretty closely and my belief is that he was a very sensitive individual with an obsession for aesthetics and justice, whose decades of repressed anger, hatred and desire for vengeance emerged at a time when German society shared these emotions in almost equal measure. Evidence suggests he knew little about the so-called "holocaust", but regardless I consider him a hero and one of the finest men to have ever lived. It's a shame about Geli and his drug use however.
