Are you asking about the anime or the manga?
In the anime, the supernatural elements are rather secondary, since it is all about the mental states of its large cast of young people with their ultimately silly trauma.

The manga's supernatural element seems to be ramped up. But then again, in the manga, everyone is acting a lot more extreme.

It is in some way. Monsters are just manifestations of psychological traumas, and appear only then the person's PTSD gets triggered.
