I usually have a high tolerance for tropes and can look the other way, but this one I cannot stand just because of how fucking retarded it is.
If MC is so damn important to the story, and has some ability that needs awakening or what have you, there are better ways to monitor him/her.
Show up at their house at night. Give them a cell phone. Plant a tracking device in their body or something. There's no damn reason you have to enroll in high school just so that you can sit next to MC.
Furthermore, then invites mayhem and chaos into the school endangering other students merely by virtue of the story now largely taking place at school.
