East Germany wasn't really nationalist. They were isolationist and disliked Nazi Germany's Imperialism and invasion and subjugation of other countries and also Prussian conservatism. Overall they were little better than the Soviets though they did have pretty good, catchy propaganda.

They were literally told to associate the western Euros and US with Fascists. Even if they weren't guilt tripped, their values were not conservatism or right wing politics. Modern Germany is a shame but that doesn't mean East Germany was very good either.
