A lot of people here have a hard time accepting this. But in the 90s and very early 2000s, in the US at least, the Right were the ones attacking freedom of speech and information. This continued into the earliest days of Sup Forums. Then the American Right shifted on this and the Left moved in to take its place, only the Left pushed much harder than the Right ever did. Sup Forums has always been about freedom of speech and information, so the userbase shifted to the Right.

Back then, we hated the extreme religious right types who wanted to ban D&D or Harry Potter or what have you because "it's brainwashing children into devil worship!"
