Part of it was due to stand shit, but I'm pretty sure another part of it was his genuine inability to parent and being too busy with other stuff. Even the people closest to him observed that Jotaro came off as cold and awkward even when he didn't try to be, and due to his own apparent lack of a relationship with his own father he didn't seem to think Jolyne would need him to be there for her.

If the main reason for him leaving his family was protecting them, I'm sure there'd have been more mention of it. As it was it seemed that it was less 'if I stay with them then someone with a demonic stand will come to my house and kill them' and more a case of his stand-fighting work making him too busy to be around them much.

The dub really nailed the desperation and determination in Caesar's voice. I just wish they'd got a real Italian instead of that faked accent.

It's Jonathan because he's actually a lot more fleshed out than people think, he arguably has some of the best character development in the manga alongside Jolyne and Johnny. Plus he's actually quite original compared to the others, while every single one of other JoJos are chaotic morally ambiguous madmen, Jonathan is just a kind and sweet guy that wants everyone to be happy, even Dio Brando.

The acting was great, especially on Joseph and Lisa Lisa's part. Caesar's accent was meh, but I didn't go in expecting an actual Italian person anyways, and I'd already gotten used to it over the course of the dub. I actually enjoyed Caesar in the dub. I don't know why he gets the flack.

Diskin and JYB had better come back for Viz's dub, though.

Also, Jolyne knowingly sacrificed herself for Emporio, too. It was arguably even more selfless and heroic than the deaths of the other people in her group - they were all killed before they even knew what was happening, but Jolyne knew she was going to die and bid farewell to Emporio before she did.

She's a bit rude, but she's arguably more like Jonathan than almost all of the others. Hell, she's probably even more similar to him than Josuke is, Jonathan could be rude and confrontational as hell at times and is a lot more driven assertive than Josuke.

So you got me there, Gappy and Jonathan are the only two that don't follow the pattern.

I´ll admit that if there is anything I miss from Phantom Blood in later arcs is the relationship between Jonathan and Dio and how it impacts the arc itself. It´s a relationship that lasts the whole arc and it not only develops these characters, but it practically defines them.
It´s also a relationship that continues to last even after the death of one of them, and it makes both characters much stronger within the narrative. (particularly Dio).
I do miss this kind of connection in Jojo, and I like it when a series uses a relationship between the hero and the villain to develop both characters.

A character having vices doesn't make them a bad person. Nearly all of the JoJos are heroes, even if they're not as morally pure as Jonathan.

the relationship in PB was the best part of it. It's why I rate it so highly, and I really love its 80s feel to it.

I love Jonathan and everything he stands for. I became a better person because of him.

He's the perfect first JoJo, because he’s the goldenhearted hero that gives rise to a great lineage and every single of his descendants takes after his strength and kindness. He had to be the almost saintly hero that he was, it’s his heart and blood and power and will that fuels the hero machine that is the Joestar line and inspires their allies.

And I like that he doesn't start out that way and that he is a spoiled and immature kid who has to grow in order to stand up to Dio. He wasn’t just a good person, he was an uncommonly, almost unrealistically good person - a pure heroic archetype - and he became such partially through his own nature (the noble heart of the Joestars) and partially through his own choices and Dio's pressure.

I like that he has to work his way into becoming the heroic gentleman he wanted to be since he was a child but not the way he wanted to. Jonathan’s personality defines what it is to be a Joestar, or a JoJo.

I like that he is wide-eyed, curious, innocent and gentle but aggressive and probably the most straight-up warrior of the bloodline considering he fights with his fists and a sword and sheer bravery. I like that his intensely muscular build contrasts most of the time with a sweet gentle guy who is, most of the time, caught unprepared for the things attacking him but he still pulls through. I like that he shows fear more so than the other JoJos.

I like that he has aspects to his personality that the other JoJos don't really have. He carries a pride for the Joestar name that even kind of affects Dio. He cries over an enemy's death. He is endlessly forgiving but he knows when to draw a sword. I like that he stands out so much compared to all of his descendants due to being a straight up good guy. I like everything Jonathan is and isn't.

Is he the best ? That is debatable. But there will never be another JoJo like Jonathan.
