there is some truth to the claim. it has nothing to do with violent content and everything to do with video game companies abusing human psychology. if you look up pretty much any article about the psychology of games you'll find out exactly why modern games suck so bad. they don't provide an interesting or challenging simulation anymore, instead they exploit the way our brain is hardwired to create a frustrating experience of grinding to obtain something our brain has deemed necessary only to instantly be told, "it's nothing you wasted your time, but the next thing really is important so keep grinding." the frustration felt by players playing modern games doesn't go away after they finish playing, it creates an agitated mental state that can last up to a week. players observed playing games with basic goals and no unlockable shit to grind for experience none of the lasting frustration. it's aaa game studios playing with fire that causes violence, not violent content in games.

i'm not sure if i was clear enough. violent content doesn't lead to violence. it's the psychological manipulation employed by modern game designers that can actually cause violent outbursts. the games basically wind people up like a spring in order to keep them sucked in and trying to unlock pointless shit that isn't even fun to play with. many of these studios hire multiple behavioral psychologists to help make the game "addicting" or whatever. it's cheaper and easier to manipulate an audience than it is to entertain them, hence tv commercials, politics, news, etc. the problem is, messing with peoples heads when you have no idea what you're actually doing can be very dangerous and cause unwanted side effects. one of these is increased frustration in their every day lives.

I did a psych literature review of this for my bachelor's; basically no. They can increase aggressiveness, though they haven't determined whether that is due to violence or stress from the difficulty of the game because these studies are fucking awful. But aggressiveness =\= violence.

However, we're talking about the general population. There is actually some evidence that it can increase violent behavior in a small population of certain individuals who are predisposed to be affected by that shit. Namely some of the mentally ill. I don't remember if they determined which disorders would make you more susceptible by anything that affects your judgement or personality disorders probably.
