Shana, Haruhi, Taiga, Revy, etc. They're all center characters but ultimately the story don't follow them. Ryuuko was both the main character and the protagonist of Kill la Kill and while there was two more MC's the plot never lost sight that she was the hero of the story.

That's almost unseen nowadays unless its in Mahou Shoujo stuff like Symphogear or Nanoha.
