>In August 2015, an African man from Eritrea walked into IKEA, took a kitchen knife from a shelf and murdered a Swedish mother and her son because they "looked very Swedish". The murder was done as a revenge for not getting permanent asylum in Sweden.
>When news broke that the African murderer had been assaulted and beaten in prison, lots of people expressed joy on social media. But one man made the fatal error of referring to the convicted murderer as a "negro".
>The man was prosecuted for hate speech under Swedish law, and for having "expressed himself threateningly in the context of using offensive language about skin color". The prosecutor also wanted the man to pay $1000 to the murderer for the offense -- even though the murderer "didn't care" that he was called a negro on the popular social media website, and "didn't know" there was a law again calling people bad words.
>Excerpt from the ruling: "The man's comment consists of hate speech according to our judgment, because the comment used threatening language. Even though the comment is specifically aimed at a particular individual, the court still believes that the choice of words is expressing disrespect towards an entire group of people with regards to skin color. Therefore the crime is to be considered serious."
