So whether or not these characters are actually going to be affiliated with the olympic games when 2020 hits is another matter.
But it got me thinking, is there anybody amongst this list you guys would change for another character and who? Bare in mind it would have to have relevance, history, popularity, symbolism etc as your reasons.
As far as mainstream is concerned, it looks fair. There are some other characters that could be included too, but I guess they only have so many spots.
Dominic Carter
This is better desu fampai
Henry Parker
These olympics are brought to you by, Shonen Jump, Bandai, Osamu Tezuka and your daily television ratings hogs.
Benjamin Torres
Remove the literal who cat from the Pokemon clone and add Pikachu
Carson Ramirez
Good thing not only the world but even Japan doesn't revolve around stupid Sup Forums meme series.
Joshua Butler
I'd maybe sub Crayon Shin Chan for Pikachu since I don't think most of the world is going to have any idea what it is. Pikachu would probably be the most globally recognizable icon on here, probably even more so then Atom, Sailor Moon, Naruto and Goku.
Dominic Richardson
Would be better if they replaced all the dudes with kawaii girls
Dylan Ortiz
Why isnt there pikachu ? Fuck yokai watch
Carter Collins
That can't be all of them, Doraemon and Anpanman are nowhere to be seen. Wait until 2020 to say what the mascots are. Who knows, maybe a series will come out between then.
Jaxson Campbell
People in my country love Shin-chan though, they just don't know it is that popular in Japan itself. It is one of the few shows they allowed on a kidsnetwork thinking it was for kids until they saw the jokes about naked women in magazines then it got banned so hard it never aired again. But it left a giant mark on a generation here who is now adult.
Precure I would swap for Pikachu, perhaps Gintama for that cat shit.
Adrian Reyes
>not one mecha >no pokemon Come on Nips.
Cameron Howard
>Gintama I meant Doraemon, fuck I should go to bed.
Andrew Cruz
Cure Miracle and Magical won't even be the year's precure in 2020. I'm assuming they're just acting as placeholders for whatever 2020's Precure girls are, otherwise they couldn't deserve to be there less.
Adrian Adams
>bakeolympics.jpg
People like you piss me off. What stopped you from calling it "bakelympics.jpg"?
Juan Myers
Isnt Pikachu more /vg/ based than Sup Forums based though and this is strictly an Sup Forums selection..
Astro Boy was possibly the first anime in a matter of speaking Sailor Moon was probably the first popular anime aimed at females Shin Chan has history. Luffy is one of the most recognisable outside Japan with Naruto and Goku, and pretty much been the most dominant anime of the last 10 years. Pretty Cure is todays most popular female targeted anime.
its just the cat......
Christopher Carter
Now that one guy said mecha. Put in the original gundam.
Nathaniel Torres
Swap Naruto for Joe.
How the fuck is Naruto there but not Joe, man? It's the olympics.
Benjamin Morris
Replace Yokai Watch with Pokemon.
Replace whatever that is on the far right after Dragon Ball with Mobile Suit Gundam.
And yeah, that's about it as everything else makes sense in terms of marketability.
Benjamin Jones
Indeed it would, but unfortunately the world is not ready for that.
Gavin Morgan
Aren't Yokai Watch, Crayon Shin-Chan, and Puricure kind of irrelevant to normalfags?
I agree they need to replace them with Gundam and Pokemon, more than anything else.
Because of the international exposure, the Gundam series would probably be "Wing"
Also, Doraemon might have no meaning to western countries, but I've yet to see a single asian who can't draw a Doraemon face by heart.
Tyler Turner
Which country? Nobody has ever heard of it here in Canada
Chase Price
I REMEMBER!
Jaxon Parker
Yeah, I'm genuinely surprised to see Yokai Watch instead of Pokemon. I wouldn't necessarily replace Pretty Cure with Gundam but Gundam should definitely be included.
Gundam should be in the Olympics only if they are allowed to use Gundam inspired eye-catch sequences for commercial breaks and cut aways.
Carter Morris
You know despite One Piece being the highest selling manga of all time, it doesn't seem to have influenced much. Not even for shonen series. It really seems to be here just because its popular.
Jonathan Robinson
Well Yokai Watch has actually been making headlines lately, and there are a lot of people who remember Shin Chan on Adult Swim, so I'd say it makes sense. Puricure on the other hand may not be a good idea.
Owen Perez
Well, that's One Piece is REALLY difficult to emulate. Many mangaka have tried making manga similar to One Piece only for it to go nowhere and get cancelled quickly for being too similar.
Joshua Mitchell
Shin-chan is less for us and more for them. As much as I love the Shin-chan gag dub it's the result of the series not being given the kind of love it deserved.
Jeremiah Wood
They'll probably do a sizzle reel of all the sports greats of manga and anime. The guys in front are just the hype men.
That video but 3 times better. The Nu Gundam just shitting out bullets should be one of the programming logos.
Joshua Howard
Not saying it should be used for merchandising, but the opening ceremony MUST include references to Akira.
Adrian Williams
Youkai Watch is the current "in" franchise for Japanese kids, so he was probably put in there to get them interested or to introduce it to countries where it hasn't caught on yet.
Sebastian Kelly
They're for Japanese normalfags (and their kids) who will buy the limited edition tie-in merchandise. The Gundam and Pokemon money machines don't really need an Olympics boost.
David Harris
It's hard to say how well Shin Chan would've fared in the West WITHOUT the gag dub. Kids shows are dime-a-dozen in America and they'd probably end up localizing and censoring the fuck out of it like they did for Doraemon if they made it for kids.
I'd rather watch the gag dub and watch the original Japanese version for the original experience.
William Ross
The score, maybe.
Easton Hill
This. Literally everyone already knows about Pokemon, and this is the perfect opportunity to market the fuck out of Yokai Watch.
Jaxon Smith
Agreed on both points. The gag dub was really the only way for it to find an audience in the States at that time. A lot of stuff was lost in translation and just wouldn't have meshed well with Western audiences.
Julian Sanders
I want to be in the stands at the opening ceremonies wearing a "Good for Health, Bad for Education" jacket so badly it hurts.
Hudson Smith
They should've chosen Luffy, Naruto or Goku. Not all three.
Ryder Hughes
It's more that One Piece as a story isn't all that revolutionary. It does what it does well, but it's clear that most of it is inspired by other works. So any copycats are better off just copying the older works .
Justin Bailey
I wouldn't recommend that user. It'll be the Summer Olympics so with the level of humidity in Tokyo, you'll be sweating like a dog in a Chinese restaurant.
Lucas Carter
Better yet, smug girls.
William Flores
And Hanamichi Sakuragi for precure and Yokai watch.
Actually, isn't that only Toei series?
Alexander Stewart
>Jibanyan >Not Pikachu.
Oh, c'mon, Till 2020 nobody will know who is Jibanyan.
Jacob Stewart
One Mushi, one Shin-ei, one OLM, and one Pierrot.
Cameron Fisher
Pikachu should be there. I don't even know who that is right of Dragon Ball.
I didn't know Crayon Shin Chan was that popular though
Joshua Powell
>Pikachu should be there Yeah, the odd one out is definitely Yokai Watch. >I don't even know who that is right of Dragon Ball. PreCure >I didn't know Crayon Shin Chan was that popular though Constantly gets better ratings than all the anime Sup Forums watches. Granted, the time slot is significantly better.
Charles Gonzalez
Why are Naruto and Goku there when Luffy is already representing Shonen battle series?
Evan Jackson
>Nu Gundam just shitting out bullets Oh, so that was his SRW Z2 finisher was referencing?
Juan Russell
No Youkai Watch should be there too. That shit was like Pokemon Go tier big
>ratings Yeah it's one of the first anime I've seen, it was really something and the dub was fucking goat, surprisingly shit like that was allowed on childrens tv back in the day, just thought I read something about the author dying in a mountain climbing accident so I didn't know it still aired
Zachary Edwards
>just thought I read something about the author dying in a mountain climbing accident
That was ages ago. Before the Tsunami/Fukushima.
Owen Evans
>No sports anime. I don't understand.
Jaxson Sanchez
Yeah, I just didn't expect reruns of a show to get great ratings. Big enough to stand next to the likes of Naruto and precure
Wyatt Fisher
>Astroboy Pretty much a given >Sailor Moon Also a given, for worldwide nostalgia fuel alone >Shin-Chan It makes sense for japan, though I that not too many people outside of Japan know who he is (and even then most people in the US probably only know him from the Adult Swim gag dub) >One Piece Most popular current shounen in Japan, mildly popluar everywhere else, makes sense. >Naruto I'd pick others over him but considering Naruto was one of the most popular shonen series for the past decade (and actually STAYED consistently popular) it makes sense. >Yokai Watch STOP TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOKAI WATCH. Should have been Doraemon >Goku Same as SM, MC of THE most popular shonen worldwide. >Precure Ehhh, I'm not buying it.
Blake Ward
People in Germany should know about it, at least the 19 and older generation. We had an awesome dub but i didnt watch any of the jap dubbed episodes so i cant really compare.
Josiah Phillips
Its fairly popular in france and germany people watched it since their childhoods to this day. We also had awesome dubbed OPs. Even popular Rappers mention it sometimes.
Oliver Bennett
Why is Yokai Watch on there when it's going to be dead in 4 years?
Benjamin Martinez
>STOP TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOKAI WATCH
I feel the same. Then again, I thought similar shit back in the 90s about Pokémon and they got me in the end. I hope I'm too old by now.
Bentley Sullivan
Would work, except you posted the worst girls on their respective series
Asher Turner
Doraemon isn't a mascot, Doraemon is the official ambassador.
Jordan Price
Doraemon has been airing in my country on national tv for years user.
Michael Campbell
Doraemon was in the actual CG preview clip for the Olympics. I'd say they didn't include him there due to that, but Astroboy made a brief appearance in that clip, IIRC.
