Bullet holes make divots on sheet metal. Because the ANGLES are all different. Bullets don't all enter material perpendicular to it.

the reason the US army uses the 5.56 caliber is because the guns have a better ROF and can send bullets downrange faster , most of the modern infantry fighting are just firing more or less in the direction the enemy until you get to grenade range or call air support. the 7.62 caliber can hit hard but not as fast , it's also heavier and a rifleman can carry less mags with him.
that's the primary reasons why the US and most of NATO uses 5.56mm.

no , i'm speaking about the amount of bullets you can send downrange (lighter rounds = more ammunitions carried and more ammo fired at the enemy) , sorry i phrased that badly :s and i phrased the close enough thing badly too , i meant that when there is no air support available the only way you can win a firefight is when either you or your enemy retreat (or disengage re-engage in a more favorable environment) , if you receive enough reinforcements or if you get to grenade range , pursuing a firefight at 300 meters or so is generally not a good idea especially when they fight militias or terrorists with RPG's , you can see plenty of YT videos where US soldiers gets supressed and take RPG's until the air support arrives. also that video near the Donetsk airport where they get pinned down with 40mm grenades.

GTG, i guess the jist of the post is that there should be errant bullet strikes everywhere and at least be apparent. Anyone who has fired such an inaccurate set up such as a bump-fire device will know that for one it takes a shit ton of practice, and two, there will be NO point target shooting especially at that range. So no. he could not likely keep the rounds concentrated on just the crowd or any particular small area. There really should be evidence of damage to surrounding buildings and rooftops. 1200 rds is not a massive amount but definately enough that most of them hitting the ground would reflect up to the buildings...and most assuredly caused more people being struck.
