Yes. I'm probably to the right of Scruton in some ways but in terms of right-wing intellectuals, of which he is one of very few in Britain, he lays out a coherent, rooted structure of conservatism. The problem with the likes of the Tory party is their quasi-autistic focus on THE ECONOMY while leaving almost all social issues to the four winds. And so they concede ground repeatedly to liberal/left-wing ideas in that arena. If they took their ideas from the likes of Scruton, they would be able to build a coherent platform which has conservative answers to social questions but as we all know, the party exists only to perpetuate itself and as such, it will adopt whichever flavour of the month meme issue that the trendy liberals are pushing.

Thanks, how was it? I think I might read it next. I think the mistake social conservatives make too often is letting the left dictate the platform on which conversation takes place, and what is and isn't acceptable. In the last thread I asked cope about that abortion debate programme on the BBC, he said that one of the points of debate was if parents should be able to abort the child based on gender. Once the argument is allowed to be framed in this way, saying that you are opposed to abortion being granted based on the gender suddenly become the right of centre idea, and so the Overton windows shifts ever to the left. If instead of entering into that argument, the social conservative makes the point that all abortion is immoral based on the fact that it is a live child, then they can reclaim ground and not allow the shift to occur. Personally, I've never understood that there is a debate about this in pro abortion circles, I mean it either is just a bag of cells no more significant than snot or it is more than that, and if you're just disposing of a meaningless bag of cells then what does the reason matter, right? I also hate how being socially conservative gets lumped in with being economically to the right. There needs to be a socially conservative and economically left leaning party, I'm sure there is a huge gap in the market for it.

It's a pretty solid read and it's interesting how he makes the case for right-wing environmentalism as opposed to the endless fear-mongering of the left-wing climate change zealots which could also be viewed as a rather convenient cover for more globalisation. There is a gap for a socially conservative party with socialistic approaches to economics and they do exist on the continent to a degree but for whatever reason they have not emerged over here. It is interesting too how you note that the boundaries of political discourse is largely defined by the left and that's mainly because they are free to be much more ideologically radical than their opponents. I remember Bowden once talked about how the left is free to flirt with its more radical forms - they can take the theory and the energy of their more radical counterparts and then they distill it down and use it. The right on the other hand has a limiter imposed on it because leftists have very cleverly meme'd the idea that "far-right" ideas inevitably lead to men in boots and death camps.
