it is adapted to match with our time, a lot of details may be different from the manga I guess (I didn't read it, I just knew the original story takes place in the 80's).
It's a good anime though.

It started off great. But then you got the stupid teen melodrama. Then all of the melodrama with YAMIYA RYOUKO and her kid. So many episodes of just nothing happening kinda piles up. And the town hall part is just a chore to sit through and was nearly meaningless in the end.
The part where he goes to that parasyte testing facility or whatever was nice, and the last couple episodes were at least interesting even though it wasnt aiming for a grandiosse final fight like most people probably wanted.
