Today is Go Nagai's birthday so I thought I'd dump my favorite manga of his, Devilman.
>Demons exist and their power is beyond what humans can fathom. In fact they are so strong that humans do not stand a chance against them in a fight. The only thing strong enough to defeat a demon is another demon and it is through this logic that Ryo Asuka hatches the plan to have his good-hearted friend Akira Fudo possessed by a demon. After raising some hell in a club the plan works and Akira is possessed by the powerful demon known as Amon. It was good, but Devilman isn't the brand of complete and utter insanity that he's known for.

Dororon Enma-kun and Enbi-chan are also among my favorites. I tend to like comic Nagai more than serious Nagai, in fact. It's just that I like Devilman even more.

Nothing is too low brow for Nagai.
Once you read Devilman, you won't be able to stop seeing parallels or similarities in future manga/anime. It may look like an outdated story whose pace is too fast now, but it had a huge impact on a lot of people back then. Lots of mangaka were inspired by this manga - Berserk's Kentaro Miura being a great example.

I forgot everyone read manga like a 5 years old today and need 10 volumes to explain the setting and plot.
It's really neat thinking just how many people were influenced by it. From Eva all the way to Pokémon you can see references and nods to Devilman and Nagai in general.

Before you go on, I should let you know that there are two scanlations of Devilman. The one you posted has these extra pages, but the translation is pretty bad.
I suggest you get the one from dynamic pro scanlations blog.
I have the blackbox edition (french), and shin devilman is literally the third volume. it also has all the extra additional pages making the final fight a little longer, and other changes as well.

I was just making a comparison to today's manga, which tends to have a better worldbuilding.
The way he changed the time period across volumes, without giving too much explanation was nice, but it also didn't flow very nicely, especially around the middle.

I think this is the same release as the one you mentioned with the added prologue. I just compared the three previous images and they're identical, down to the typesetting.
The next volumes also have the same credit page/group.

Yes, it was mentioned that the ice was melting and the devils were gonna attack everything, but in a single volume? That was too quick. He should've padded it out a bit.

The art is good, but the story is Dante's Divine Comedy. There's not much happening other than Dante traversing through Hell and seeing all these sinners. Well apparently that's how the original poem was as well.
