I'm also the type that can't draw, so I always get anxious about the art.
Sometimes when fantastic animators join my staff, I celebrate like "woohoo!" and tell them to draw however they want, and my checks get too easy-going (especially lately).

What follows is what seems to be a couple of scenes or cuts from the movie that Yamakan questions whether the art really conveyed what Shinkai wanted. I haven't seen the movie so I'll skip translating this part.

Good, let animators draw however they want, especially if they're as skilled as Shinkai's roster for this movie. The last thing we need is someone who would willingly flatten Hiroyuki Okiura or Shinya Ohira's styles like Miyazaki did in all his movies.

You have a point about Ohira, but has Okiura ever worked with Miyazaki? Anyway I don't see Okiura's style to be that conflicting with say, a fastidious AD save for if he has to draw his trademark scrunched facial expressions.

That aside, Yamakan himself shouldn't be one to talk about managing animators seeing that an episode of Kannagi managed to overshoot the allocated drawing count.

Well, he did say in this interview that he likes to let animators go crazy, as opposed to Miyazaki who is controlling of how everything is drawn. I'm just not sure why he thinks Miyazaki's way of doing things is better, hell his way of doing things is one of the reasons Ghibli died after he retired.

The trick is to understand your artists' styles and then to weave that into your movie. Don't let them go crazy, but let them be themselves.

Kannagi has lots of great animators.
Somehow Yamakan managed to burn the bridges with all of them.

In Miyazaki's defense, I don't think he and Takahata ever particularly planned on Ghibli surviving them, save maybe for the sake of Kondou. It was always more or less a personal venture, I doubt they were all that concerned with making an establishment.
