Koe no Katachi

Why should I read this? I'm two chapters in and this MC is complete trash. Him feeling bad for his actions later won't make me accept him.

Is this one of those stories where the whole idea is to just make you cry? I really don't see the point in reading any further. It is a shame though because the deaf girl is a qt

KnK is mediocre at best, but "MC is an asshole two chapters in" is a dumb as fuck complaint about a bullying manga. What were you even expecting?

Its just kids being kids. At first they do dumb shit and only later when they grow up they realise what they've done had a major impact on them. Of course everything could have been resolved if the teachers werent incompetent as fuck. But hey thats real life. But if you just a normal person who never experienced depression this might come off edgy for you.

You shouldn't. Just watch the movie.

Just wait for the movie

>Is this one of those stories where the whole idea is to just make you cry?
I would say yes. The characters are there more to make drama than to be analyzed deeply.
>But hey thats real life
No. Practically all adults in this series are despicable beings. Yeah, real life is tough, but the story forces this cruelty too much.

>Practically all adults in this series are despicable beings
Name them all.

There are 2 ways to make a manga about bullying.
>The realistic way:
Where the characters are complex beings, so that the reader can not set them easily, which leads them to reflect.
>The melodramatic way:
The characters are one-sided beings with predetermined functions (the good, the bad, etc.).

KnK is the second option. We love Nishimiya, the victim, and hate Ueno, the bully. When Nishimiya suffers, we cry. When Ueno suffers, we laugh in revenge.

The manga is not a waste, of course, but is far from being a great example about the issue.

The teachers, Nishimiya's parents (except grandma), the film critic.

Only the male teacher was a piece of shit, the female one actually tried to help. And Nishimiya's mother is hardly despicable, far from it actually once you learned more about her.

I personally didn't like it but I see how it could appeal to people. The thing that bothered me the most about it is that pretty much every single character in the whole story is either an asshole or a complete retard. Most of the conflicts in it originate from that.

>lets her daughter get bullied constantly and thinks it's her fault when she comes home without her hearing aids
>instead of contacting the school she buys new hearing aids which cost a lot of money
>she's more ashamed of her daughter being deaf than actually care for her during most of the story and the only part where she shows she cares is when she slaps that girl whose name I forgot

Why is the whole thing translated into caps? Is this common for manga? It's incredibly annoying.

She worked two jobs to support her two kids and her elderly mother.
She never blamed Shoko for it, Shoko never told her it was bullying.
She did contact the school eventually when it happened too often and she caught on.

MC becomes the kindest person after the time skip

>Why should I read this?
you shouldn't, especially if the beginning isn't grabbing you

Drop it

Welcome to Sup Forums, please either lurk for two years or leave immediately.

>she's more ashamed of her daughter being deaf than actually care for her during most of the story

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a flash back where her husband leaves her and her family in law disowns her because she wouldn't abandon Nishimiya? Something like that at least.

I've seen that damn page so many times that I didn't even give OP's thumbnail a second look, let alone open it. You are, of course, correct.
>mangapanda

Yes and I found that to be even more stupid because if she does care for her daughter why the fuck is she a cunt to her 80% of the time? It's like she constantly blames her for being deaf.

Fuck off and kill yourself, newfag.

Oh god, how new?

She's just a cunt in general user. A lot of parents are like that actually.

what about the father?

The one shot is good. There's a point when it can feel like deaf people charity propaganda, which isn't bad, but it can make it feel cheap.

It's a short read and if you're drunk you might get some feels. Cute grills, but no porn.

So you haven't even read a western comic before either?

That guy was an asshole and a coward

>brought his parents to divorce his wife

>it can feel like deaf people charity propaganda

>There's a point when it can feel like deaf people charity propaganda, which isn't bad, but it can make it feel cheap.
The fact that every chapter since 15 started with "UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE JAPANESE FEDERATION OF THE DEAF" really soured the experience for me. Makes it all feel so fake.

No. I've only read like 5 manga though and never really noticed it, perhaps this is just a different font or something because I can't stop reading it as if they are shouting constantly.

I had the same opinion as OP and it isn't that he was being an asshole 2 chapters in (because he wasn't), it's that he was suddenly not all asshole and they're suddenly supposed to be best buds.

Get the fuck out.

See? It's cheap writing to make you cry. The mother is rigid, the father is a son of a bitch, the teachers are indifferent. I think Nishimiya would be blind and without an arm too, but the editor must have thought it was too much.

It's only cheap if you find the situation unimaginable. But sadly there's plenty of children who grow up in broken homes and plenty of educators who aren't equipped to handle children with disabilities. There are parts of the manga that I felt were manipulative but these aren't it.

She's been through a lot and didn't want to cuddle her daughter since she knew everyone else won't. She wanted her to become more tough and sure, being more supportive would be better for her, but she did what she thought was best

>There are parts of the manga that I felt were manipulative but these aren't it.

Same here. Like the asshole authority figures, the unchecked bullying, the redeemed former bullies. All too familiar really.

Look, I know there are shit in the world. But there are good and not so good ways to express this in a story. There is no balance in KnK. It is as if the world of that girl was surrounded by bad people. Like, the father abandoned her just because. He married, had two babies and then "oh, fuck this deaf child, I'm out". It takes finesse to write this kind of manga.

call me edgy or whatever but crying & depressed girls really turn me on.

Actually, the manga's pretty on par for how Japan handles people with disabilities, especially teachers. They have this mindset that it is your fault if you are bullied, and don't really accomodate for kids with disabilities because it just means you are an inconvenience. Teachers turning a blind eye or sometimes joining in shitting on someone who is bullied is common. Like, say say you are bullied to the point where some kids beat the shit out of you. Your parents are rightfully upset, and go to the school about it. Instead of bringing in the other kids involved and their parents, and giving them detention or some shit, the administration will just strongly suggest that you switch schools. Instead of dealing with the actual source or the problem, which is the agressors, they blame the victim. Shit's fucked up over there

>WHERE'S MUH HEALING?

Nah her grandma and sister cared about her very much. And say what you will about the mother being too cold, but she too loved Shoko in her own way.

I know this happens, the problem is how it is portrayed. The girl is good and cute, the world is evil and cruel. Where are the gray areas? We are human, we are complex, not black and white.
yeah, and her way has to be hard and cold, because it's good for the drama. plus, grandma died (oh no).

OP here, I read up to chapter 41 since making this thread and I agree with many points in this thread about how it is too black and white. I feel like the story doesn't really go anywhere it just repeats itself constantly. I guess i'll finish it up later because I do like the deaf girl but this manga isn't as great as it is often proclaimed.

What grey area do you need? What these kids were doing was simply wrong, but shit like that does happen and I don't really know what kind of moral dilema you want from story about bullying. That she may have deserved it?
