Obviously the board is mixed, primarily because it is such a multifaceted issue with a lot of historical context we have not been exposed to. The fashys of the board will see it as disrespect of Franco who saw the suppression of Spanish identity with the Basque and Catalans as an act of rebellion that made the country's nationalist project weaker as a whole. This is a good take. I share your view on self determination and ideologically believe government should be as decentralised as possible, but I recognise the issues complexity so wouldn't want to lecture a Spaniard who has stakes in it.

Second it's, as any separatism, is extremely dangerous example for others. There is always a regions in any couyntry that produce more, and they usually think that they feeding rest of the country. It's normal, but Catalonia makes that an excuse to break country apart. This is by all means not very good.

Spain is the most decentralized country in the EU, Catalonia is not the only autonomous community there are 17, each of those autonomous communities have their own parliament, President, law, institutions... and this form of decentralation hasn't produced more individual freedom quite the contrary as per instance the Catalan government interferes with every aspect of the individual, from private business to education.

I can't speak to others, but main argument is slow decline of nation statr which a lot of people mourn (I don't see any tragedy here). But with slow decline of authority of Spanish crown and religion binding elements of union become less important and Catalan people turned to leftism from rebellion and several economic factors.

There are ony 3 autonomous communities with the competences of Catalonia which are the forementioned plus Galicia and the Basque Country. No other regions have the same competences and foundation nor the same legal processes, historical recognition and privileges.

The way the spanish regional configuration works is a total mess and that's probably one of the reasons why there's so much strenght from independists movements in those particular regions even though in Galicia they don't seem to care that much anymore.
