I thought their plot would go somewhere else during S2, S1 they seemed disconnected, a way to view 'average joe stumbles upon something and gets involved', but it just doesn't go as I'd expected given the information and contact they eventually had. Wasted potential, much like the rest of S2 being incapable of capitalizing on what S1 set up.

Anime can't into romance-drama for shit, this isn't the medium for that. Read a book, watch TV or movie from culture (preference here). Either because writers/directors cannot piss off the very small paying customer middle ground/no advancement is typically taken. We don't even get many VN adaptions that pick a single route anymore because it alienates buyers of girl X.

How was the second season of this? I was so satisfied with how the first season ended that I didn't bother tainting the ending with the second season or the movie.

Second season is pretty good if you are looking into more battles (especially in space) as well as a more dramatic focus on the main characters. Despite what some may say otherwise, the plot stands out fairly strong and carries good messages that represent 00 as a whole. I just rewatched it in the summer and the experience remains fresh after all these years.

The movie is a hit-or-miss though. Introduces too many things and rushes them within the limited time, You can definitely choose to skip it if you are fine with S2's ending as well.

The light novel has more content after the point anime ends, after becoming supper living metal Gundam, Setsuna has now the power to rejuvenate people and that's exactly what he does with Marina then they both proceed to travel through the galaxy along with Gundam, he literally gets everything he wanted, he got the god level Gundam, he turned into Gundam and the "princess" with even more experience and knowledge. if you think about it its a harem end.
