I have read at least one report that claimed a low-yield and primitive atomic weapon was used on the Eastern Front, and Stalin sent a message directly to Hitler that if another atomic device was used the USSR would have no choice but to resort to chemical and biological weapons. Based on his own experience being gassed in the First World War, it stands to reason that Hitler would spare his soldiers this cruelty.
