Return To Castle Wolfenstein (2001) was and still is one of my most favorite games of all time, both the single player and multiplayer. They really gutted my childhood with this SJW cringe fest bullshit.

This. It has a decent story, so obviously it's not Bethesda. It's a very well made game - the graphics are solid, the gameplay solid, it's well written, and there are some plot twists that are surprising but good. They go places few games would. It;s Machine Games, a Swedish company, they made Wolfenstein:The New Order and W: The New Blood, so they know the franchise pretty well. Plus, they used the same engine as Doom. And yeah, there are bigs, but not as bad as the ones Bethesda Studio ships.
The only thing with this game is replayability. There's stuff for completionists, but once you've done the story, there's no real need to go back, you'd just be searching in corners for shit. Unless they release some good DLCs for it, I don't see any reason to replay it. Some people are blowing through it in 5-6 hours, that's a problem for a game at this price.
Still, great game. I enjoyed it. The whole feel was spot on, never once did I think "Oh, bullshit!" or think they'd gotten anything wrong.

I'll tell you why I hate this game.
Its 40 bucks for 10 hours of content, no multiplayer and lackluster story.
It has NO graphical improvements over the first, NO improvements to gameplay and absolutely NO replayability and NO ability to modify it.
This isn't a sequel, its not even an expac. Its a goddamn piece of overpriced overdue DLC.
Now take a look at XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, for example. You get a game with huge improvements to the gameplay, bugfixes, content and balance adjustments AND workshop support with endless replayability. THAT is how you do games.

It's hard to say for sure without solid data, but release week sales are usually 50%+ total sales and often like 70%+ (exceptions to this rule tend to be good games with poor/no marketing which grow/explode from word-of-mouth)
Shitty games with good marketing get high release week sales, but trash long-tail sales (long tail refers to a statistical distribution curve I'm sure you can google it) because word-of-mouth spreads that the game is shit.
Shitty games with bad marketing get shit release week sales AND shit long-tail sales. This is where Wolfenstein 2 seems to fit in.
If the last Wolfenstein game sold ~800k copies in the first week, and Wolfenstein 2 has sold ~150k in the first week by comparison, then you could argue that their pro-communism, pro-antifa, absurdist lefty-messaging marketing attempt has actually cut their sales by at least 80%. That's remarkable to be honest.
How many more games and movies have to go through this before the developers and publishers finally realize that games are played by cishet white men, and that alienating them isn't conducive to making money?

I encourage you to look up and investigate their behavior. They are worse than Activision/EA tier.
Bethesda by the way, is an awful company. They take on the same kind of money-grubbing, spend-a-dollar-to-save-a-dime culture that infests their parent company. Have you ever wondered why Oblivion and Skyrim are so buggy? It's not just because of the engine - Bethesda is a well-known gamedev mill where graduates go to get their first taste of game development before moving on to better development studios.
That's why everything is amateurish and often out-done by modders: Their staff is full of young college grads with no experience and little understanding of what they're actually doing.
They forgot that marketing alone doesn't sell games, especially if the marketing has shit all to do with the actual game and is just politics baiting.
It definitely gives you a good hook to haul potential customers inboard, but once you have their attention you still need to provide an actually at least somewhat interesting game.
Wolfenstein completely failed on that front. It's why every thread about it is nothing but politics shitposting from beginning to end, because there's simply nothing else with regards to that game that would be worth talking about.

Viral marketing aside, it's not good game. I really enjoyed TNO and OB, but this one kinda sucks. I played it for some time now (got the body transplant), but still can't put my finger on what is off exactly. It's not new and colorful (read beaten to death caricatural stereotypes) cast. And it's definitely not the enemies you shoot.
Shooting is the same (don't really mix weapons, two ARs and two shotties still rule), Levels feel more linear and smaller. Enemies pretty much the same, but now there are more drones and Big Guys 4U appear more often (though they die really quick). Nazi terminators are new, but they die all the same.
I guess it's just two games, good, but with little variation were enough, but the third one is an overkill. Something a talentless hack would do.

Mario is the epitome of what most people look for in a video game. It's story is there as an excuse for the gameplay and not to push some kind of agenda, and the game is simple enough that you can start playing right away without a 2 hours tutorial while still having a fairly high mastery cap.
