Discussion is ongoing as part of the "Offensive and Dangerous Weapons" consultation. It is likely that if they decide to ban those kind of firearms (or similar ones) along with .50 "Material Destruction" rifles, the legislation will be in place by Q1-2 next year, as per their stated plan in the consultation document (gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/651758/IA_Firearms.pdf)
I'm aware that BASC and other organisations have been in talk with the Home Office about this, but it seems to me they are focusing more on the .50 than the MARS guns, as usual they behave as if throwing some people under the bus will help them. There was also talk of arguing that current items could be grandfathered in and no new ones allowed to be registered, again screwing a lot of people for a marginal few.

Joined a club, took like 5 months for probationary period, then took me a couple of months for my FAC to get processed. Turnover for applications depends on your area mostly.
People will die just as easily if you shoot them with a lever gun, bolt action rifle or shotgun. You can talk about how it isn't "ideal" or "of use" but the fact is you have a gun and whoever you are dealing with (in the UK) most likely does not. Not that I would ever advocate shooting anyone since that would be against the law and I'm a law abiding citizen. Why not be as prepared (to shoot targets at a range) as you can (legally) be?
