Because it's all they have. They don't have thousands of years of history, language, ethnicity and culture to bind them, like we do in Europe. It's the same reason they place so much value in symbols like flags, pledges and national anthems, while we don't really care about shit like that here. Just to be clear, I'm not having a go at them. If anything, we could do with being a little more nationalistic in Europe, but there's a perception that it's beneath us and for "lowly, uncouth Americans".
