Honestly, its too long to explain. The gist is that Iran and Saudi Arabia are having their own little cold war and it just so happened that Syria was in Iran's sphere of influence so they wanted to take it down. Western nations naturally joined Saudis on this. Different nations had control over different rebel groups which they armed and trained to take down Assad (as explained by Qatar's PM) Soon rebels began recruiting terrorists to join them including ISIS and al- Qaeda. Al- Qaeda (HTS) emerges as the most powerful rebel group and starts controlling most of the other rebel groups ISIS leaves rebels and starts shit with everyone. Everyone hates ISIS at this point so the US starts bombing them but not really because ISIS is the group most capable of defeating Assad and they don't want to weaken in too much until then. But then ISIS decides to invade Iraq where it was originally from because they think they can get a lot of support there. Iraqi army is shit as per usual and loses a third of their country in literally 2 weeks. So Iraq blamed the US for it, Iran seized the opportunity to help them thus bringing them in their sphere of influence, YATA YATA you can write a 10 series novel on all the shit that happened in this war. Im just going to stop here.

Sometime tells me that the upper echelons who were good clients with Central Intelligence were evacuated out of the region and dropped to their next assignment (West/Central Africa/ South/Central Asia). The foreign fighters get a free passage and airplane ticket home with no questions asked.The lower tiers or the "disenfranchised" Iraqi or Syrian Sunni are instructed to fade within the local Sunni population and await further orders for the next Sunni uprising in the region or somewhere else.
