It's more complicated than that. I'm not that interested in relitigating conflict with the british again. Our identity can't be based on that. The pace of dissolution sped up tenfold once general peace in the north was achieved because for so many people that rivalry was one of very few ways in which they identified as something that could be understood as Irish. A form of that rivalry that's potent enough to serve as a basis for real identity is never ever coming back.
