that's cause American stout has no milk in it normal British stout is 8 to 10%

Milk stouts are weaker than normal stouts dingus. 4-7 is right for one of those. Now any other kind of stout or Porter should be around 8 and could approach 12 if it's something good like speedway stout or a bourbon stout by a good brewery.
